Monterey is one of those places that I had been to a few times, but now that I have my son we go to quite frequently. I’ve been there for work and for play, so I’ve stayed at more than a few of the hotels in the area. With a world class aquarium just a few hours away – it’s definitely a must visit place if you live in the Bay Area (or anywhere for that matter – Monterey is gorgeous!)
Top 3 Hotels (there are way more than 3 though!)
- InterContinental, the Clement Monterey (IHG)
- Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa on Del Monte Golf Course
- Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa
Intercontinental, the Clement Monterey an IHG Property
If money is no obstacle, it is really hard to beat this option. Literally right next to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, it’s gorgeous, oceanside, convenient, and perfect for lovebirds and families alike. We like that it’s super easy to pop in and out of the aquarium all day long, especially with a small baby in tow. Plus, the spa is delightful if you need some rest and relaxation. It’s also smack dab in the center of the action in downtown Monterey, so it’s within walking distance of restaurants and shops. Talk about lap of luxury and convenience!
Cons: it is pricey. The last time we were here, it was to the tune of $400+ a night (weekdays can be cheaper though). And, the rooms can feel a bit on the smaller side for what you are paying. If you do get a room with a oceanside view though, this hotel is right on the water so be prepared to feel blown away.
Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa on Del Monte Golf Course
This hotel is my top pick – I’ve stayed here for work and for pleasure. It’s mid price point for Monterey’s higher end hotels (we paid $245/night this past weekend), quiet, and feels secluded even though its only a 8-10 minute drive to the aquarium. They also have a really nice spa, gym, pool, and plenty of walking paths. Bonus if you are a golfer – this is a famous, historic golf course that’s been around for over 100 years. They also have a really good restaurant and cafe on site (plus room service). The restaurant was so good we ate there both nights of our recent stay!
For you workers and event planners out there – if you’re looking to get some work done or host a conference – look no further, this place has you covered. I feel like every time I stay here, there’s something going on (yes this place is that big).
Cons: rooms can feel a little small, but they do have balconies. This place also does have pet friendly rooms – so our last stay we could hear a barking dog for part of the evening next door. And, if you’re traveling on a budget this one may not be it (my recommendation if you’re on a budget is to checkout Embassy Suites or the other Hilton brands in the area).

Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa
Alright, this one had to make the list – although I haven’t stayed here yet, friends and family have been raving about this place. From the perfect location in downtown Monterey, to the rooms, I’m adding this one to the list. According to my friends, this place has it all. Oceanfront luxury, its within a few blocks walk of the aquarium and right next to some top notch restaurants and cafes. They have a rooftop spa, and all the trappings of a luxury hotel – there’s even a luxury car rental service so you can drive along the California coast in style. Prices range from $300-$400 per night depending on the dates.
